Beissert: The pusher

10/06/10  ||  cadenz

Beissert are a German band that don’t seem to know what they want to sound like, or at the very least fail at sounding like they know what they want to sound like. Get it? Do you? Sure? Penis? This, their second full-length, sounds like they used the good ol’ “everyone gets to play” formula when deciding what genres they would incorporate on it. “The Pusher” is a complete and utter mess of half-assed material from divergent metal subcategories, put together half-assedly. You might have guessed by now that I do not hold this disc in very high regard.

Stale Black Sabbath-esque riffs intermingle with shouted gang/hardcore vocals, wannabe-Pantera solos and nu-metal breakdowns. Some semi-proggy Mastodon shit is on now, a pure Teutonic thrash metal riff kicks in… and what’s this? They managed to rip off the “Roots Bloody Roots” main riff note for note. Here’s an ““atmospheric”” (notice the sarcastic double quotation marks, I’m a genius) interlude played on an out-of-tune piano. I wanna kill myself.

If one would be forced to put this in a category, it would have to be some kind of groove/stoner metal. Some riffs aren’t actually too bad, and the singer manages to sound OK most of the time. I sense some Phil Anselmo vibes on his raspy cleans, but the growling department isn’t as exciting. There’s not much wrong with the musicians’ execution, it’s the material they’re executing that’s the problem. The production I guess suits the music, it’s quite dirty and sludgy, but every instrument can still be heard well.

Hmm, a sweet bass sound they’ve managed to conjure from the fiery depths of Dresden. A groovy riff, this might be the best… ohh, now the singer went The Darkness/King Diamond on my ass, falsetto deluxe. Goddamn, if Beissert just could try to avoid mish-mashing everything into a fucken omnisoup of garbage, this could actually be listenable. Now, not so much. Good luck next time.
